Gede and SLNI Hold VCT Outreach Activity at Dutse Community

March 09, 2010

Gede Foundation, in cooperation with Silver Lining for the Needy Initiative (SLNI), held a voluntary counseling/testing (VCT) outreach activity on February 26, 2010 at Dutse Community in Bwari Council of the FCT in Nigeria. Additional support came from the Federal Ministry of Health (HIV/AIDS Division) (FMOH) and the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).

Gede's mobile laboratory van was used for sample collection and testing while temporary tents were set up for pre- and post-test counseling. One hundred twenty six (126) residents were counseled, tested, and given their results. Those that tested positive were referred to healthcare facilities that offer comprehensive HIV services. All who came for testing were given information materials and condoms during the awareness and counseling sessions.

The community chief, Chief H. Haruna, and community support groups participated in the process. The team from SNLI was led by Ms. Hauwa Abbas (CEO and Coordinator). With her were Oscar Opara, Abiye Braide, and Bukky Kamson (volunteer members).

The Gede team consisted of its program officers (Godwin Etim, Emmanuel Okafor, Helen Okoye), laboratory technologists and clinic staff who served as testers and counselors (Emmanuel Mshelia, Ifeoma Ogbukagku, Mary Nache, John Adakolo, Solape Bamijoko, Toyin Adeyemi, and Christie Awunor), and administrative staff and volunteer (Wesley Ropshak and Henry Luka), and a volunteer counselor from FMOH/NASCP (Abu Abdulrasaq) all contributed their services to make the activity possible.

Gede Foundation will continue to partner with other organizations to conduct as many VCT services to rural communities in the coming months. If you or your organization wishes to work with us or if your community wants to avail of these services, please visit us at No. 13, Danube Street, Maitama, Abuja, Nigeria.
